The Cure es una banda británica de rock que comenzó su carrera a finales de los setenta con la edición del LP Three Imaginary Boys.

Es muy difícil categorizar a The Cure en un sólo estilo musical tomando en cuenta el sonido de la banda a lo largo de su dilatada carrera, ya que en algunos trabajos se puede escuchar un sonido claramente oscuro (Pictures of You y Lullaby), mientras que en otros se puede encontrar música más alegre (Mint car o In Between Days), sonidos post-punk y hasta ciertos toques de electrónica.

No obstante, la apariencia estética característica del líder de la banda, Robert Smith, frecuentemente vestido con ropa negra y mostrando un rostro pálido y un lápiz de labios borroneado en la boca, sumado a letras que con frecuencia son introspectivas y existenciales, han hecho que la banda sea asociada erroneamente con el rock gótico.

Entre el año de su formación (1976) y (2004), the Cure había logrado vender alrededor de 27 millones de discos en todo el mundo.

Hasta 2008, The Cure ha editado 13 álbumes de estudio, treinta y cuatro singles y numerosos recopilatorios y reediciones.

Three Imaginary Boys es el álbum debut de la banda de rock británica The Cure.
Three Imaginary Boys fue re-editado más tarde en Estados Unidos como Boys Don't Cry. El cual seria su primer álbum en ser calificado en el puesto 442 de la lista de los 500 mejores álbumes de todos los tiempos
Un hecho curioso acerca de este disco es que contiene la única canción en la historia de la banda no cantada por Robert Smith: La canción "Foxy Lady", versión del clásico de Jimi Hendrix es cantada en este álbum por Michael Dempsey, el bajista original de la banda.

Seventeen Seconds (1980)

Seventeen Seconds es el segundo LP de estudio de la banda británica de rock The Cure. Su primera edición fue lanzada en abril de1980.
El álbum tuvo una acogida desigual por parte de la crítica. Algunos críticos elogiaron el trabajo, mientras que otros lo describieron como una mera "colección de bandas sonoras". Un crítico tachó el álbum de ser "triste, sentado en habitaciones frías, mirando relojes".
A pesar de ello, algunos medios comenzaron a prestar atención a una banda todavía muy desconocida. Aparecieron largos artículos sobre la banda, presentando las últimas fotos de Robert Smith todavía sin maquillaje y con el pelo corto, previas al cambio de look que se convertiría en tan característico. La "anti-imagen" de la banda (con las ilustraciones incluidas en el álbum, la portada, y las fotos de los miembros del grupo fueron causaron controversia en aquel momento. No obstante, el trabajo artístico, controlado por Robert Smith a diferencia de lo que ocurre con Boys Don't Cry (donde la discográfica modificó la portada que estaba definida en un primer momento), enlaza mucho mejor con la música que en aquel álbum.

Faith (1981)

Faith es el tercer LP de la banda británica de rock The Cure. Su primera edición fue lanzada en 1981.La portada del álbum la compone una foto de la abadía de Bolton en la niebla.
Faith es considerado un álbum de carácter depresivo y brumoso. Algunas veces se le describe como "la calma previa a la tormenta" del siguiente disco del grupo, el oscuro Pornography. Una de las canciones del disco, The Drowning Man se inspira en una serie de novelas de Mervyn Peake.
La temática del álbum gira sustancialmente en torno a la falta de fe del líder del grupo, Robert Smith, y su empeño por encontrarse con ella.

Pornography (1982)

Pornography es el cuarto LP de la banda británica de rock The Cure. Su primera edición fue lanzada en 1982.Este álbum es considerado por algunos como el más oscuro y deprimente de todos los de que la banda ha editado a lo largo de su carrera. Sin proporcionar el menor atisbo de alegría, este álbum parece estar envuelto por una atmósfera de auténtica desesperanza. Por poner un ejemplo, la letra de la primera canción del álbum One Hundred Years, comienza con la frase "It doesn't matter if we all die." ("No importa si todos morimos" ).Con el transcurso de los años, Pornography ha ido ganando adeptos, y hoy día es considerado como uno de los mejores LP de la banda, sin duda el paradigmático del estilo temprano del grupo, y uno de los álbumes clave para entender aquella época musical.
Cabe destacar que durante el tour de presentación de este disco, se dio comienzo a el maquillaje característico de The Cure, al tratar de representar en escena, el dolor y la intensidad de dichas letras.
Pornography es el último disco de la banda en el que Laurence Tolhurst aparece en los créditos como baterista. A partir de este momento, Tolhurst, miembro fundador de la banda, se convertiría en el teclista del grupo.

The Top (1984)

The Top es el quinto álbum de estudio de la banda británica de rock The Cure, publicado en 1984.
The Top es el primer álbum de estudio completo tras Pornography (los dos anteriores, Japanese Whispers y Concert son una compilación de singles y un disco en directo, respectivamente). Tras componer Pornography, Robert Smith había roto la relación con su colega Simon Gallup, quien dejó el grupo tras una pelea en un bar con Robert. La salida de Gallup supuso un cambio radical en el sonido de la banda. Tan solo unos meses después de grabar el oscuro Pornography, con temas como "A hundred years" "Siamese Twins" o "A Strange Day", Smith grababa un éxito del pop electrónico, "Let's Go to Bed", de carácter marcadamente festivo, con la sola participación de Lol Tolhurst, y Steve Goulding como baterista, contratado para las sesiones de grabación. Tras "Let's Go to Bed" llegaría "The Walk", y posteriormente "The Lovecats", que se cuentan entre los más conocidos temas de The Cure. Los tres singles (integrados posteriormente en la recopilación Japanese Whispers, de un carácter poppy, marcaban una nueva época en el sonido de The Cure, opuesta al contenido de sus tres anteriores álbumes. The Top continúa por la nueva senda. The Top incluye el single "Shake Dog Shake", uno de los más interpretados en los conciertos de la banda. Robert Smith fue el compositor de la gran mayoría de la música del LP.

The head on the door (1985)

The Head on the Door es el sexto álbum de estudio de la banda británica de rock The Cure. Fue editado en 1985.
Este álbum está marcado por el regreso de Simon Gallup a la formación, y la introducción oficial de Porl Thompson (en The Top ya había tenido un papel menor, pero no fue introducido oficialmente hasta el tour que se realizó como presentación del álbum). The Head on the Door es también el primer álbum de The Cure con el baterista Boris Williams, quien había trabajado previamente con Thompson Twins. Ron Howe de Fools Dance, realiza una aparición en el disco, tocando un solo de saxofón en el tema "A Night Like This."
The Head on the Door es generalmente considerado como uno de los grandes del grupo. Se le suele designar como paradigmático del sonido de The Cure posterior a Pornography, iniciado por los temas incluidos en Japanese Whispers, y hasta cierto punto continuado por The Top.

Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me (1987)

Kiss me, Kiss me, Kiss me es el séptimo álbum de estudio de la banda inglesa liderada por Robert Smith, The Cure. Producido por Dave Allen y Robert Smith, fue lanzado en 1987 inicialmente en formato de disco doble vinilo (según se afirma, como una especie de conmemoración por los 10 años de existencia que cumplía la banda ese año). El álbum, el primero de estudio de The Cure en sobrepasar la hora de duración, es por tanto el primero en explotar al completo las capacidades del formato CD.
El disco en sí pasa por una diversa cantidad de estilos, en los que refleja los distintos estados de ánimo de Robert Smith pasando desde la furia descontrolada (temas como "The Kiss", "Fight", "Shiver and Shake", "Torture" ) canciones siniestras y sombrías ("Like Cockatoos", "The Snakepit", "If Only Tonight We Could Sleep" ), y con temas más serenos y románticos como "Catch", para pasar luego a un pop más juguetón incluso en coqueteos con las pistas de baile ("Why Can't I Be You?", "Hot Hot Hot!!!" ), que hacen pensar que fueran dos discos diferentes pero entremezclados como si fuera uno solo.Lo que explica Robert Smith en relación al disco, es que la forma de componer "Kiss me..." fue resultado de las varias ideas que iban aportando los 5 integrantes de la banda cada uno de forma independente, por ello el resultado de que el disco parezca demasiado diverso.

Disintegration (1989)

Disintegration es el octavo álbum de estudio de la banda Británica de rock The Cure, lanzado en 1989.
Fue el disco más exitoso de la banda hasta ese momento, llegando a alcanzar la posición 12 en el Billboard de Estados Unidos. No es de extrañar, puesto que la banda estaba en ese momento en la cumbre de su popularidad.
Disintegration fue el primer disco de The Cure en ser grabado específicamente para el formato CD. Por ello, la versión vinilo no contiene las canciones "Last Dance" y "Homesick". La versión CD dura más de 71 minutos, acercándose a los impactantes 74 minutos de Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me, muy por encima de la duración media de un disco de rock. De hecho, seis de las doce canciones del álbum tienen una duración superior a seis minutos.

Wish (1992)

Wish es el noveno álbum de estudio de la banda Británica de rock The Cure. Fue lanzado en 1992.
Es el último álbum en el que aparecen Porl Thompson y Boris Williams, y el primero en contar con Perry Bamonte. Kate Wilkinson realiza una aparición especial, tocando la viola en la canción "To Wish Impossible Things."
A pesar de que el álbum no fue tan bien acogido por la crítica del momento como su predecesor de 1989, Disintegration, se convirtió en el de mayor éxito comercial en la historia de la banda, debutando como número 1 de ventas en el Reino Unido y número 2 en Estados Unidos. La canción "Friday I'm in Love" se convirtió en un gran éxito, y ha quedado como una de las más populares del grupo.
El carácter más ligero de este disco en relación a sus predecesores, que lo hace más fácil de escuchar y por tanto de llegar a una audiencia más amplia, es duramente criticado todavía hoy por muchos de los seguidores históricos de la banda. No obstante, el disco desprende una calidad musical innegable, y si bien no es un típico producto de The Cure, es sin duda alguna un muy buen disco.

Wild Mood Swings (1996)

Wild Mood Swings es el décimo álbum de estudio de la banda Británica de Rock Alternativo The Cure. Fue lanzado en 1996.
Tras el éxito arrollador de Wish, The Cure aparentaba estar al borde de la separación definitiva. La salida de Porl Thompson y Boris Williams de la formación, y el retiro de Simon Gallup por problemas de salud había reducido la alineación a dos miembros, Robert Smith y Perry Bamonte. A pesar de todo, la banda consiguió mantenerse a flote el tiempo necesario para que Simon se recuperara, y para convencer a Roger O'Donnell para volver.
Wild Mood Swings fue el primer álbum con el nuevo baterista, Jason Cooper. No obstante, debe tenerse en cuenta que Cooper no grabó toda la batería del disco, ya que durante la grabación se estaban produciendo audiciones de diversos bateristas, y al final se conservó el material de varios de ellos.

Bloodflowers es el undécimo álbum de estudio de la banda británica de Rock Alternativo The Cure. Fue lanzado en 2000.
Bloodflowers, un álbum de reducido presupuesto, es considerado por muchos de los fans de la banda como el retorno a las raíces de la banda, tras álbumes de gran presupuesto y desigual resultado. Bloodflowers tuvo una buena acogida entre la crítica y tuvo un gran éxito en un público reducido y formado en el sonido de la banda. Es este relativo éxito el que supuestamente llevó a Robert Smith a reconsiderar su decisión de separar el grupo tras la gira de este álbum.

The Cure es el duodécimo álbum de estudio de la banda británica de Rock Alternativo The Cure. Fue lanzado en 2004. Es destacable el hecho de que la banda haya esperado 28 años de carrera para lanzar un álbum homónimo
El álbum desprende el clásico pero aún peculiar sonido pop del grupo, en su estilo eminentemente oscuro. The Cure se mueve por lugares intransitados en su anterior discografía, sin duda influidos por la presencia del productor de heavy metal, Ross Robinson. En este disco Robert Smith propone letras directas y melodías que, de alguna manera, repasan la vida anterior del grupo, con pasajes musicales que remiten a sus discos anteriores. De esta manera, con las siempre esenciales canciones pop y hasta los pasajes más densos en los que Smith, dolido, grita en el micrófono mientras la música crea atmósferas depresivas. El propio Smith ha dicho sobre el álbum que "si este disco no le gusta a la gente, entonces no les gusta The Cure".

4:13 Dream es el título del decimotercer disco de la bánda británica de rock alternativo The Cure. Originalmente planificado como doble álbum, el disco es uno solo, a pesar de que en las sesiones de grabación se grabaran 33 cortes. Su lanzamiento mundial fue el 28 de octubre de 2008. A día de hoy se han extraído 4 sencillos de este álbum, pero aún no se ha filmado ningún video. 4:13 Dream ha tenido una recepción desigual por parte de la crítica especializada.

El nuevo ep de Los Planetas y que ahonda en la vena flamenca del grupo con cuatro versiones de canciones de Manolo Caracol. Lo que no se había dado a conocer hasta ahora es que el esperado ep de los granadinos llamado Cuatro Palos y que, aunque ya haya sido filtrado en la red hace unas semanas, está en la calle de manera oficial desde el 8 de diciembre. 'Romance de Juan de Osuna', la única que será incluida en el próximo disco previsto para febrero de 2010.

The Velvet Underground - Discografia

The Velvet Underground fue una banda de rock formada en Nueva York en la década del 60. Aunque nunca alcanzó el éxito comercial, es una de las bandas de rock más influyentes de la historia y posee un intenso culto, a pesar de haber durado pocos años.

Fue una de las primeras bandas en experimentar con la forma e incluir influencias avant-garde y, especialmente, el ruido de guitarras que los hizo definir el uso del noise dentro del rock.

La banda se formó en 1964 cuando Lou Reed, que había tocado en algunas bandas de poca duración, trabajaba como compositor para Pickwick Records donde conoció al galés John Cale, que se había mudado a Estados Unidos para estudiar música clásica y tocaron juntos en un grupo llamado The Primitives con el objetivo de promocionar el single de Reed "The Ostrich". Reed y Cale congeniaron y pensaron en fundar un nuevo grupo. Para ello buscaron a Sterling Morrison, a quien Reed había conocido en la universidad y con quien ya había tocado, y a Angus McLise, vecino de John y Lou. Formaron así The warlocks, que luego se llamarían The Falling Spikes. Llegaron a grabar una cinta donde se encontraban "Venus in Furs", "Heroin", "Wrap Your Troubles In Dreams" y "The Black Angel's Death Song".

El nombre de la banda surgió del título de un libro sobre sadomasoquismo de Michael Leigh titulado The Velvet Undeground que Jim Tucker, amigo de Reed y Morrison y hermano de Maureen Tucker, encontró tirado en la calle.

Después de que Andy Warhol se convirtiera en el manager del grupo, sugirió que la modelo y estrella de la Factory, Nico, debía cantar en la banda. La banda no se sintió cómoda con la sugerencia y Reed y Cale sentían que estaban perdiendo el control, pero finalmente aceptaron para aprovechar la promoción que Warhol les podía dar y se convirtieron en The Velvet Underground And Nico. Algunas canciones fueron adaptadas para ser cantadas por Nico y durante las que Reed cantaba ella tocaba la pandereta.

Lou Reed despidió a Warhol de su puesto de manager luego de que su relación con la banda disminuyera y también despidió a Nico. Pronto, en septiembre de 1967, comenzaron a grabar su segundo álbum, White Light/White Heat, el cual fue editado en enero de 1968.

Este disco llevó las principales características de la banda (el noise, la distorsión, la atonalidad) a su punto máximo de crudeza. Cale definió el disco como "conscientemente anti-belleza". El álbum entró al top 200 de Billboard por exactamente una semana en el puesto 199.

Dentro del grupo las tensiones crecían debido a la poca atención que el grupo recibía y también por las crecientes diferencias de intereses entre Reed y Cale. Finalmente, Reed le propuso al resto de la banda elegir entre él o Cale; Tucker y Morrison se quedaron con Reed, principal compositor dentro de la banda. Mucho se ha rumoreado sobre la envidia que Reed sentía por Cale debido a su prodigioso talento (estudiaba música clásica desde antes de los cinco años y ya había compuesto para los ocho) y su entrenamiento musical clásico. El puesto de Cale fue ocupado por el bajista Doug Yule.

El tercer disco de la banda fue grabado a fines de 1968 y editado en marzo de 1969. El sonido representa un gran cambio respecto de los dos discos anteriores. Tiene un estilo más tradicional, tranquilo, parecido al sonido que caracterizaría más tarde la carrera solista de Lou Reed. Este cambio se debe a que el control creativo de la banda había sido tomado completamente por Reed luego de la partida de Cale que era el miembro más orientado hacia la experimentación y responsable directo del lado más vanguardista, con el detalle de sus contribuciones multiinstrumentales en el piano y la viola eléctrica.

El último disco oficial de la Velvet fue grabado y editado en 1970 en el sello Atlantic Records luego de ser despedidos de su anterior sello, MGM, debido a que el flamante presidente de la compañía, Mike Curb, decidió eliminar a todas las bandas relacionadas con drogas o hippismo de la discográfica.

El disco, titulado Loaded, es el más tradicional y accesible de todos los de la banda. Contiene algunos de los temas más clásicos, como "Sweet Jane" que se convertiría en uno de los temas más conocidos de Reed. Debido al embarazo de Maureen Tucker, la batería fue grabada por varias personas incluyendo a Doug Yule, el ingeniero Adrian Barber, el sesionista Tommy Castanaro, y Billy Yule, hermano del bajista Doug.

Después de una larga residencia en el célebre club neoyorkino Max's Kansas City, (durante la cual Billy Yule tocó la batería en reemplazo de Tucker y se grabó el disco Live at Max's Kansas City) Reed decidió dejar la banda en agosto de 1970 y volver a la casa de sus padres en Long Island.

El disco Loaded fue, gracias a "Sweet Jane" y "Rock And Roll", el disco más, si bien no exitoso, cercano al éxito de la carrera de la banda, pero el líder y compositor de la banda ya no estaba en ella por lo cual Doug Yule tomó el control. Curiosamente, la popularidad de la banda, si bien se mantuvo igual en Estados Unidos, creció en Europa durante esta etapa. La banda salió de gira por la costa este de Estados Unidos y luego por Europa con Yule a cargo de las voces y la guitarra, Walter Powers (compañero de Yule en la banda Grass Menagerie) en bajo y Willie Alexander (también de Grass Menagerie) en voz y teclados reemplazando a Sterling Morrison quien había dejado la banda en 1971 para seguir una carrera académica en la Universidad de Texas. Parte del público de la banda se burlaba de esta formación llamándola The Velveteen Underground.

El disco se llamó Squeeze y fue despreciado por la crítica e incluso, con el paso del tiempo, desapareció de la discografía oficial de la banda. El disco nunca fue reeditado y su rareza y valor se ha incrementado con los años
La banda tocó su último show en el club Oliver´s de Cambridge el 27 de abril de 1973 y finalmente Yule disolvió la banda en junio del mismo año.
